Transfer Deadline Day was perhaps quieter than previous ones, with little drama – certainly compared to the likes of West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie unexpectedly turning up at Loftus Road, and Fernando Torres joining Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m.
The expenditure between football’s top clubs did not seem too high either, although some deals involving prolific players really stood out. With no further ado, here’s a bet builder featuring three new signings set to make their respective debuts in the coming days.
Karim Benzema (Al Ittihad to Al Hilal) – Free
Benzema caused quite the stir in Saudi Arabia when he refused a new contract offered to him by Al Ittihad, branding it “disrespectful”. He has since moved to Al Hilal – another club owned by the Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has seemingly had a knock-on effect elsewhere.
Indeed, Benzema’s former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo – now playing for another PIF-owned club in Al Nassr – has gone on strike, claiming that his team are not being backed in the market enough compared to their rivals. Benzema’s move to Al Hilal could give them the edge in the Saudi Pro League title race, with Al Nassr currently behind them in second.
Al Akhdoud vs Al Hilal: Benzema over 0.5 assists (12/5 @ Coral/Ladbrokes)
Benzema should make his Al Hilal debut away at second-bottom Al Akhdoud in the Saudi Pro League on Thursday evening. With his team heavily favoured to win, the Frenchman should get some joy on the pitch.
Interestingly, in his previous three league debuts for Lyon, Real Madrid and Al Ittihad respectively, Benzema provided an assist in each. He is a goalscorer by trade, but better odds offered for assists means this is a market we are happy to explore.
Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves to Crystal Palace) – £48m
The most expensive Deadline Day signing was Strand Larsen from Wolves to Crystal Palace for a reported £48m including add-ons. Given the riches of the Premier League, it is no surprise that this was the case.
With that price tag comes a level of expectancy, and while Strand Larsen only scored one league goal for Wolves this season, he netted 14 in his debut campaign in 2024/25.
Brighton vs Crystal Palace: Strand Larsen to score anytime (5/2 @ betway)
Is it a ‘real’ derby? Well, it’s real enough for Palace fans when the likes of fellow south enders Charlton and Millwall are languishing in the lower echelons, and it is certainly a fixture both teams love to win. Strand Larsen could – and would – win the Palace fans over immediately with a goal on Sunday afternoon.
With Jean-Philippe Mateta reportedly injured and perhaps in need of being taken out of the firing line after a failed January move, Strand Larsen could start up front, which would give him the best possible chance of getting on the scoresheet.
Ademola Lookman (Atalanta to Atletico Madrid) – £30.3m
Sunday could also see another high-profile debut in Lookman after his Deadline Day switch from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid.
The Nigerian was pushing to leave Bergamo for a while, and he finally got his wish. A tally of 55 goals in 137 appearances for Atalanta shows his goalscoring prowess, and we should see plenty more from him in an environment that suits him better on a personal level.
Atletico Madrid vs Real Betis: Lookman to score last (5/1 @ bet365)
In all three of Lookman’s previous top-tier league debuts for Everton, RB Leipzig and Atalanta, not only did he score, but he also netted the last goal in each game. As a new signing, and given Atletico’s already brilliant forward options, Lookman could start from the bench on Sunday evening, which could put this particular bet more in his favour.
