The third round of the FA Cup undoubtedly produced the greatest shock in the competition’s history, as Macclesfield of the National League North knocked out Premier League opposition – no less the FA Cup holders Crystal Palace – with a 2-1 win at a jubilant Leasing.com Stadium. Now, all eyes will be on the fourth round to see if similar upsets can happen.
With no further ado, here are some FA Cup fixtures for which the underdog offers the best potential value for money.
Friday 13th February: Hull vs Chelsea
Liam Rosenior could suffer the ultimate nightmare on Friday 13th when he takes Chelsea to the MKM Stadium to face Hull – a team he has both played for and managed. As a Hull player, he suffered FA Cup heartbreak when he lost 3-2 to Arsenal in the 2014 final.
As Tigers manager, Rosenior never got past the third round of the competition in two attempts. However, he made no such mistake in his debut game coaching Chelsea, as they thrashed Charlton 5-1 away from home in this season’s third round.
Hull should be a tougher opponent for the Blues though, with a recent 3-2 defeat at home to Bristol City halting a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, with the Tigers winning five of them. They are still fourth in the Championship standings, and could earn promotion to the Premier League come the end of the season.
Chelsea had a wobble themselves against Leeds last time out, blowing a two-goal lead at home to draw 2-2. The Blues could weaken the starting XI here too with significant changes, which would certainly give Hull the chance of an upset.
Our tip: Hull to win @ 87/10 (10Bet)
Saturday 14th February: Liverpool vs Brighton
While a Seagull’s win at Anfield wouldn’t be a giant killing in the usual sense, Brighton’s odds to beat Liverpool at Anfield seem too good to ignore, and so we are in love with this Valentine’s pick. The Seagulls are not in great form admittedly, but they were galvanised in the third round after beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Despite beating Barnsley 4-1 in the same round, Liverpool were still not entirely convincing, and the same complacency could kick in here. The Reds may shift their focus onto qualifying for the Champions League next season, which would put the FA Cup low on their list of priorities.
Brighton would have looked in envy at their biggest rivals Palace winning the competition last season and breaking their trophy drought, and so their fans will really want them to go for the FA Cup this campaign. If they play a strong XI and Liverpool make significant changes, they will have a chance.
Our tip: Brighton to win @ 9/2 (bet365/Betfred)
Sunday 15th February: Grimsby vs Wolves
Can Grimsby do it again? They knocked Man Utd out of the Carabao Cup earlier this season, and playing at home to Wolves should be an easier task.
The Wanderers are rock-bottom of the Premier League, and aside from being all but consigned to the drop with more than three months of league action still remaining, their dreadful season could get worse if they lose to a League Two side. At the time of writing, Grimsby are on a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions too, winning six of them.
Winning habits are great to have for whoever a team plays, while Wolves have very much become accustomed to losing. Nonetheless, going to Blundell Park with the weight of expectancy on their shoulders could prove too much for them.
Our tip: Grimsby to win @ 61/10 (10Bet)
Our bet builder: Hull, Brighton and Grimsby to win @ 371/1 (10Bet)
Placing all three of these ambitious bets at 10Bet would yield huge odds of 371/1. These are, of course, huge odds, and we always urge people to gamble responsibly – but as we all know, the magic of the FA Cup has seen crazier things happen!
